Following our adventures in geocaching

About Time, I Think

Great to see you again! Join the discussion.

We’ve spent a great deal of time out geocaching and gathering our adventures and stories that I figured it was about time I chronicle our experiences. My guide and reference has been the definitive geocaching site, Geocaching.com. I’ve learned so much from just browsing the forums, learning about other cachers’ experiences both good and bad.

Geocaching is something that would appeal to me. I’m something of a techy person. I like gadgets. I had a GPS. I had a PDA. I had considerable experience in GIS. It was a natural. My husband and I are both outdoor people. It was perfect. So onto the adventures.

We took my husband’s car in for repairs yesterday. While we waited, we decided to hit a cache near the downtown area. The cache was located along a soon-to-be developed trail system that was once a railroad track going through town. We were surprised on first walking the trail how well-used it was already as a neighborhood trail. The large rocks were a bit cumbersome to walk on, but we were able to follow a parallel path that was much easier.

You learn to be observant when geocaching. My husband used to hunt deer and has a keen eye for trails. So when you see a trampled down area off the main trail, you have a good idea where to go, especially if the cache has been found recently. We soon located the cache. I was very impressed with the location. This cache will probably survive the development of the former railroad. With this one as with many caches we’ve found, we also were rewarded with some nice views and some quiet without any road noise. It’s those little things that make the sport so worthwhile.
