Despite the rain over the weekend, we decided to head out for some geocaching. We picked a park that we had visited before, with the rather curious name of Purgatory Park. Supposedly the name comes from early settlers, remarking on the mosquitoes that they encountered on this swampy trail. “It’s not hell, it’s purgatory.” So legend has it.

The park is beautiful. It’s nice to see the active restoration efforts underway. Like most parks, there are official trails and deer paths that people make into trails. A few of our finds were located along the latter, my kind of find well off the beaten path.

We only snagged a few. The muggle traffic increased steadily during our time there. I did manage to pick up a travel bug from one cache. The cache, according to its travel bug page, had a coin attached to it, something that looked kind of nice like a goecoin. Curiously, the coin was missing when I found it. The dog tag and the cahin were all that was left. How odd that someone would swipe the coin and not the entire travel bug. Well, at least I can put it back on its way to fulufilling its mission to stay busy.

There are good travel bugs, and then there are ones you’re truly enjoy. That’s my take on two travel bugs of mine, Debra’s Travel Bug and Emma’s Travel Bug.

Both travel bugs include keys placed in a geocache by local students. Each student placed a key in the cache. I made travel bugs out of the keys I found. Students are able to track its journey from cache-to-cache.

Debra’s Travel Bug has moved over 4,500 miles, from Ontario to Hawaii and points in between.

Emma’s Travel Bug is an equal traveler traveling in California, Michigan, and Maine to name a few stops. Her journey has logged over 5,900 miles.

I’m just thrilled to have these bugs moving along and to be helping out the kids.

Most of my travel bugs have some personal meaning. Perhaps that is my mistake. I mean, once it’s out of your hands, you have no control. Part of the fun of geocaching. This travel bug was personal though. It introduced my family to the world of geocaching. Its loss stings a bit because of my attachment.

The mission for my little travel bug was to visit the states where my sisters live. It was on its way to Florida when it stalled in Texas. Emails to the cache owner and the last geocachers gave me the bad news. It was gone.

I like to think that a geocacher will find it in his geocaching bag one day, feeling remiss for keeping it so long. I wouldn’t be angry for the delay. Rather, I’d welcome its return and cheer it on to Florida.

It was fun while it lasted. In the beginning, there was a lot of activity on it. I enjoyed following its progress on Google Earth. Oh, well, maybe it’ll turn up again some place. RIP Sister Reunion Travel Bug. Safe travels.
