Celebrate Nature With Bird Day

I love geocaching, even more so when I can be out in Nature and hear birds singing. I love learning how to identify bird songs so that I know who is around even if I can’t see them. Welcome to Bird Day!

Spring is such a great time to be out geocaching, albeit the ticks. The warblers are back. Every day, it seems like there is a new returning migratory bird. Today, we saw a cattle egret and a loon.

I took several courses in ornithology in college and grad school. There’s something truly magical about observing and understanding the secret life of birds. My most treasured birdwatching moment came one cold spring morning. It was before dawn. The fog was still in the air.

We drove past a farm field of cut corn. Through the fog, we heard their calls. Then, we saw the sandhill cranes doing their mating dance. It was the most amazing nature moment I ever experienced. The cranes hadn’t heard our approach. We watched as they danced in the mist. Wonderful! From that moment on, magic meant fog and the song of cranes dancing in the mist.

Today, I challenge you. Take the time to find birds in your area. You may have to go early to catch them on their time, but if it’s anything like my crane experience, you will always relish the time to connect with Nature.
