Geocaching Challenges

Great to see you again! Join the discussion.

bjornson wisconsinOur typical geocaching trip is fairly mundane, i.e., we may walk a lot, but we’re usually not mountain climbing. That is until last month. We decided to steam ahead and climb the mountains of west central Wisconsin when we visited Bjornson Education-Recreation Center.

Bjornson offered a unique opportunity to get a good number of caches within a small area. The 443-acre site provides geocachers with currently 34 geocaches, the majority placed by geocacher, mama kat. These geocaches are absolutely some of the most physically challenging caches that I have ever attempted. Caches with such names as “Climbing Tower” and “Just Plain Evil” give you an idea of what you’re up against.

Disregarding logs and cache descriptions referring to caches as oxygen suckers, we wisconsin landscapeplunged ahead. I loved every moment of the challenge, despite struggling with the hiking, having just recovered from the flu. The caches posed an additional challenge that we have never encountered before–black bears. Mama Kat told me one of her caches had suffered at the hands of a bear, determined to get into a lock-n-box. Word to the wise: these containers are bear proof.

I’d love to make the same or a similar trip, as I live in MN. Just a few questions – How did you decide which caches to hit (did you use trail maps etc)? And how much help was the Bjornson Education-Recreation Center for setting up the trip?
