Get Ready for Spring! Learn About Butterflies Day Today

Great to see you again! Join the discussion.

As the snow melts away, creating a muddy quagmire everywhere, I feel a bit hopeful when I see those patches of green starting to emerge.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s still plenty of snow. The ice on the lake is still plenty thick, and the cars are still driving on it. Just when I thought we’d never get rid of the snow, there appears the grass.

One of the quintessential things of spring and summer are butterflies. Our native prairie garden attracts a lot of them. I can’t help but smile when I see the monarchs gathering on our blazing star.

Everything seems to have a holiday and butterflies are no exception. Here are some butterfly facts for your next cocktail party. Keep hoping! Spring geocaching is only weeks away.

  • Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees.
  • Female butterflies usually are bigger and live longer than male butterflies.
  • Butterflies can’t hear, but they can feel vibrations.
  • Most butterflies prefer flowers that are pink, red, purple, or yellow and that are open all day.
