March 21—World Forestry Day
As a geocacher, chances are you spend a lot of time in the woods. You know old logs intimately and the creatures that call them home. You can recognize prickly ash, poison ivy, poison sumac, and stinging nettle from a mile away. It makes sense then that you would celebrate forests. Welcome to World Forestry Day!
Geocaching brings us closer to our forests. Perhaps it has helped you appreciate them more. Your geocaching has probably helped you discover things about them that you didn’t know before. You know what belongs in a forest and what does not.
You probably recognize some of the wildlife associated with forests. Maybe you’ve found a geocache in a hold that a pileated woodpecker conveniently made. Or maybe you heard the distinctive call of a barred owl as the day faded into sunset, but you were determined to find that geocache.
As you geocache in the days ahead, think about the forests and what an important habitat they are. Think of the wildlife which depend on them for food and cover. This day as every day, tread lightly in these important ecosystems.
