National Wildlife Refuge Week–October 11 – 17
Though we know geocaching is permitted within these sites, it’s worthy to note that this week marks National Wildlife Refuge Week.
Refuges are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of the Department of Interior. These public lands are set aside for the purpose of conserving our national treasures of fish, wildlife, and plants. There are 550 national wildlife refuges, including some of the most pristine and unspoiled in the nation.
It’s also worth noting that refuges are safe bastions for threatened and endangered species. Refuges provide habitat for over 700 species of birds and 220 species of mammals. Not only do they protect wildlife, but they contribute nearly $1.7 billion to local economies. These are definitely worth a find.
