Outdoor Adventure To Geocaching

Great to see you again! Join the discussion.

My husband and I have always been outdoor enthusiasts. Taking up geocaching was a natural for us. In fact, an outdoor adventure brought us together.

Our first adventures were in caving. (Don’t call it spelunking to a caver.) I enjoyed the challenge. While we brought along climbing gear, I left that part of the adventure for others. I preferred scrambling over the rocks. If a trip took us to low areas, I didn’t mind crawling along to get to the next stage. It was a tough sport and very physically demanding.

You don’t mess around when you’re caving. You can’t cave in t-shirts and tennis shoes. In fact, we knew of a few kids who got into more than they could handle while caving unprepared. Time for the Arcteryx and North Face clothing. So, if caving taught us anything, it was to be prepared when you go out.

That knowledge and experience has followed us into geocaching. I had to laugh a few weeks back when we went out geocaching. The snow was still pretty deep. We were dressed in our Gore-Tex and gaiters. As we started out, we saw a couple guys in tennis shoes and jeans heading out on the trail in front of us. Geocachers, we thought. As it turned out, if they hit any of the geocaches that we hit, they were going to have a tough time of it. Always prepare.

So, we play it smart when we’re out. The pack always has water and a few snacks. The proper hiking boots come out as does the Gore-Tex. An outdoor adventure is fun if you prepare.
