Yes, they are lying. They have purposely created the GMO food debate and fanned the flames of an issue that does not exist. Sound familiar? It’s from the same playbook that climate change skeptics use.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science has stated, that,
“consuming foods containing ingredients derived from GM crops is no riskier than consuming the same foods containing ingredients from crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques.”
They don’t stand alone on this view. The EU’s report, “A decade of EU-funded GMO research (2001-2010),” concluded that,
“. . . and in particular GMOs, are not per se more risky than e.g. conventional plant breeding technologies.”
Similar views are expressed by the World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, the British Royal Society, and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. So who are you going to believe, these authoritative sources or the Huffington Post?
Breaking Down the GMO Food Debate
Okay, I’ll back down a bit from lies. As with any rumor, something starts the ball rolling. In this case, it often stems from a misunderstanding of science mixed with fearmongers in popular media who thrive on controversy. Let’s look at what they’re saying.
GMOs are not tested.
Total and complete bunk! Nothing gets past the FDA and USDA on this score. Everything you buy at a grocery store is subject to some kind of regulation. GMO foods are analyzed for any potential health issues, including proteins that may trigger food allergies or toxicity. It’s not the Wild West out there.
GMOs cause [fill in the blank].
Again, total hogwash. A review published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry concluded that, “. . . suspect unintended compositional effects that could be caused by genetic modification have not materialized on the basis of this substantial literature.”
The studies stated by the anti-GMO crowd have not proven their case. The 2012 study suggesting that GM maize had negative health effects was retracted because “the design, reporting and analysis of the study, as outlined in the paper, are inadequate.” The analyses that I have cited involve 10+ years of experimentation and numerous studies.
The anti-GMO crowd hurts their cause more than helps it. And they are doing it for the wrong reasons. In the meantime, people suffer and die from hunger. Developing countries, for example, can benefit from GMO foods. In the words of George Bernard Shaw,”Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance.”
