Proper Footwear for Geocaching

Great to see you again! Join the discussion.

We’re getting ready to hit the trails again for some geocaching. I have to admit that we’ve taken a bit of a hiatus with all the snow. Seriously, we have three feet of snow throughout our backyard. I’m sure the trails don’t fare any better. It’s time to think about what we need to navigate those waterlogged trails.

The first consideration of course is shoes. I’ve always opt for shoes constructed with Gore-Tex whenever possible. There’s nothing worst than soaked socks, especially when you have a long trek back to the car. One of my favorite brands is Merrell Shoes.

Just like you customize your geo-bag for your specific needs, I have learned after many miles on the trails that you need good footwear that addresses the challenges you face. You should never skimp on what you put on your feet.

Unfortunately, my trail shoes are reaching the end of their days. I’m not one of those who tracks how many miles I have walked in my shoes, replacing them once I reach 500 miles. Rather, I go by how the shoes have held up. My current pair is probably about two years old.

One thing that is pushing me toward a new pair is the tread. Years of walking has rubbed off that lug depth. My traction consequently has suffered. I notice this more as I geocache in the winter. The icy trails become downright treacherous during this time of year. I’m leaning toward buying a pair of Merrell’s Waterpro Ottowa.

I’ve always bought Merrell casual shoes. I like the look and it fits my outdoorsy image. They are comfortable and last forever. That’s what I want—something that lasts.

Yes, the trails are sure to be slippery this weekend. We tried to pick some caches that are on trails likely to be cleared. I’ve restocked my geo-bag. We’re not sure how many geocaches we may end up finding, especially if they’ve been around awhile. Somehow, I don’t think a geocacher is anticipating three feet of snow as a criteria for being winter friendly.
