Following our adventures in geocaching

Something Cool

Yesterday, my husband, my sister, and I were interviewed by Lakeland Boating magazine, regarding our experiences boating and geocaching. The article is to appear in the May issue and online. As we related to the journalist, our best adventures were boating in Door County, Wisconsin. We’ve boated before on big lakes, but Lake Michigan, for all practical purposes, is an inland sea.

We visited two islands, Horseshoe Island and Chambers Island, with a mind to find geocaches. Horseshoe Island was our first destination. The island is just about one mile off the shore near Peninsula State Park. My memories of our day there are paradise. The water was fabulous. The island was gorgeous. What’s more, we had it to ourselves, for awhile at least. The caches were located on a trail that snaked around the island. Staying on it was a challenge of itself. The caches were the type that are rewarding–not too difficult a find and in an ammo container.

Our second adventure took us to Chambers Island. The boating was much more challenging. In fact, if Geocaching.com could add a 5+ difficulty, this would be it. The trip involved boating through big water, nervously trying to avoid the shoals. Forty five minutes later and we were wading in the much cooler waters of Chambers Island. This geocache was special. The whole family came along for the ride. And it was to be a first to find. We were a bit new at geocaching at this point, but we managed to locate the geocache and record our first FTF.

Geocaching made these boating adventures possible. If you ever have the opportunity, do it and you can go to yet another island you never would have visited before.
