The Challenge of Spring Geocaching

Aside from the ticks and other little nasties, geocaching in the spring and summer poses their own unique challenges. Snow melt and spring rains mean sloppy, slick trails. It’s a golden opportunity to trash some walking boots or twist an ankle. That’s certainly not the kind of find you want to score.

Our favorite geocaching takes us to parks. Being where we are in Minnesota, a lot of these parks contain wetlands and low-lying areas. Some places are located in or near those wonderful ephemeral spring wetlands. Finding water on the trails isn’t uncommon. I also look upon it as an opportunity. Muggles are less likely to be on these water-soaked trails.

As with all outdoor ventures, proper clothing and preparation are key for a good outing. If the park has trail conditions available on their website, take the time to check. The last thing you want is to drive all the way out to the site only to find the trails closed due to rains or migrating/nesting waterfowl populations.

Take plenty of water. Hiking uses a lot of energy. Also, take time to dress properly for the conditions. I like to wear shorts when the possibility of slipping on a muddy trail is high. Hiking the trails in wet jeans is no fun. Boots are fine when hiking, but not. If even a bit of moisture gets inside, you’re uncomfortable. That’s why I made a switch. I’ve become a fan of Keen Newport H2 Sandals. Sandals are just the thing for the weather gets warmer and the trails wetter.

I’ve considered sandals before, but wasn’t satisfied with the construction. There are still plenty of rocks and debris on soggy trails as they are on dry trails. I wanted a rugged sandal that protected my toes. I also wanted something comfortable and that didn’t rub against my feet. The last thing you want on the trail are blisters. With sandals, your feet dry quickly. It’s all about preparing yourself.

I was really impressed with the promotional video of Keen Sandals. If I’ve learned anything from my time outdoors, it is to invest in proper clothing. If you’re outfitted for the outdoors, you’re ready for the journey.

couldn’t see the video or picture or whatever is there! I love Keen, Though I don’t own a pair… I used to work at a ski shop/outdoor store that sold them and heard a couple suppliers talk about them. I wish I had a pair!

thanks fr posting the video! i haven’t actually found proper sandals that i could safely take hiking with me, but i might give these a try. they look solid and might be well fit for lighter trials on warmer days especially somewhere around a stream to cool off – i wouldn’t have to take them off to enjoy the water!
