Trusting Your GPS

I love my GPS.  Though it is something of an antique in this age of Tom-Toms and Garmin nuvis, my old Garmin 12 Map suits me just fine.  I trust my GPS to get me where I need to go, but frankly there are limits.  This story from Yahoo News illustrates my point.

Apparently a convoy had to be rescued after GPS led them to Utah cliff.  No mind you’re driving in an unfamiliar area.  Desert?  Mountains?  Who carries?  I have my GPS.  But really folks.  The GPS will tell you how far away you are from your destination.  That should give you some clue about gas consumption.  I suppose the GPS contents should read, “Batteries and common sense not included”.  The story might be amusing if it weren’t so scary.  Sixteen adults and ten children were involved.

Technology is a great thing, but it is impersonal.  In the course of my work at my day job, I can’t tell you how many people when asked their phone number have difficulty remembering it.  Seven on my speed dial just won’t work.  No, when it comes down to it, there’s nothing like a compass and a topo map to get you on your way.
